Place matters: The Location Strategy for the United Kingdom
Baroness Andrews, the Communities and Local Government Minister responsible for the GI Panel has today, 25th November 2008, published Place Matters: The Location Strategy for the United Kingdom (PDF).
The strategy has gathered strong support within and across government since it was finalised in October 2007. The strategy has been recommended for publication by the Domestic Affairs (Public Engagement and the Delivery of Services ) Cabinet Committee, by the three devolved administrations and by the Ministry of Defence.
On publication of the strategy Baroness Andrews made a statement to the House and CLG issued a Press Release.
Implementation of the strategy will be assigned to Defra as the lead Department for the EU INSPIRE Directive. The UK Location Strategy and the INSPIRE will be combined within a single programme currently referred to as the UK Spatial Data Infrastructure (this is a working title and is likely to be changed later in 2009). The programme is not yet fully funded.
The second meeting of the new governing body, responsible for coordinating spatial information across the UK, the UK Location Council, was held on 13th March and the work of.the programme is now in the preparation stage. The Location Council also approved the Report on Responses to the Location Strategy (PDF) for publication.
The GI Panel has now been closed, having delivered and secured the UK Location Strategy.
Looking forward, further news on the implementation programme for the strategy will appear on dedicated pages, most likely on the Defra website, in the second quarter of 2009.
The GI Panel web pages will no longer be maintained.
