Andrew Burchell

Career history

Andrew Burchell Andrew is a career Civil Servant. Having graduated from the London School of Economics in 1976, where he obtained a BSc (and an MSc in 1980), Andrew joined the Department of Health & Social Security in 1976 as an Economist. After promotion to Economic Adviser in 1984, he had spells in the National Audit Office (1984‑86) and in the Department of Health (DoH) (1986‑89) where he worked on NHS reforms.

In 1990, he joined the Department of Transport as a Senior Economic Adviser working on railway privatisation and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, becoming Head of Profession in Economics in 1994; Director, Strategy and Analysis in 1996; and Director, Transport Strategy in the then Department of Environment and Transport (DETR) in 1997. In 1998, Andrew became the Director of Environment Protection Strategy in DETR.

Shortly after the creation of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs in 2001, became the Finance Director. In November 2005, Andrew was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in Defra.
